Participants, observers and conditions

A participant is anyone who steps aboard a simulator.

Aboard the Boeing 737 MAX

On the B737 MAX, that means everyone. This professional simulator — genuinely one of a kind — has a real passenger cabin with no separation from the cockpit, and near-360° visuals from a very large projection system. There is no outside to watch from: the cabin is the experience, and nobody aboard is an observer. That is why the price of a B737 session depends both on the duration and on the number of people aboard.

Pilot and passenger roles can be swapped during the session, as you please (see "Taking turns at the controls" below).

The instructor takes the co-pilot seat and helps whoever is flying get the most out of it. If several participants want to fly, the instructor can give up that seat for a two-pilot flight and move to a passenger seat just behind the crew. Whether that works is for the instructor to judge, given the group and the duration.

Aboard the other simulators

An observer is anyone who follows a session from outside the simulator, usually seated on a raised seat behind the pilot or pilots.

On the Beechcraft Baron BE58, the F-16, the F/A-18 and the Combo, observers can join the session free of charge, up to the number shown in the table above. The price of those sessions therefore depends on the duration alone. Here too the roles can be swapped: everyone can take the controls in turn, within the capacity shown and as long as the duration allows (see "Taking turns at the controls" below).

The BE58 has a co-pilot seat, usually taken by the instructor, who gives it up readily for a two-pilot flight — easier than on the B737, and therefore more common; the instructor then sits behind the crew, together with any observers. The F-16 and the F/A-18 are single-seaters: the pilot is alone in the cockpit and the instructor stands just behind, outside it.

In every case the price shown covers the whole session, briefing included — not each person.

Taking turns at the controls

If your group wants to alternate pilots, allow a minimum of 12 to 15 minutes per person at the controls. Below that, the experience loses its flavour: you have to change pilot, reconfigure the simulator, run a quick briefing again, and give the newcomer time to get a feel for the aircraft before entrusting any flight or mission to them. This is only a recommendation — how you share the time at the controls is up to you.

Coming with children

Taking the controls calls for a certain maturity: we put it at around 10, and rather 12 on the B737, which is a demanding airliner. This is not an administrative rule but an indication. If you believe your child is ready despite their age, simply say so to the instructor: the call is theirs, on the day.

On the B737, a child of 7 or over counts as a participant and their seat is charged, whether they fly or not. The rule is the same as for an adult: what you pay for is a seat aboard and the experience that goes with it, not time at the controls.

Under 7, your child does not count as a participant and pays nothing — not as a perk, but because this experience is not really meant for them. They must stay under your active supervision throughout the session and may not move around the premises freely.

Our advice, from experience: before 10, attention fades after a few minutes, and it is the parent who pays the price — it is hard to let yourself be carried by the immersion when someone beside you needs attention. You came for this flight; make the most of it. They will have plenty of time to come and fly in a few months or a few years, when their turn comes.
